So this is a picture of Landen struggling to have a b.m. He has been going throug this since he was 1 month old. He never went through that liquidy baby poop stage, after the first month he went straigh to solid poopies. Poor guy. When he was almost two months old I took him in to see his pediatrician and she said to give him 2 ounces of STRAIGHT prune juice, so we did. Never again have we done that. He sucked it down and INSTANTLY threw it all back up. (I switched doctors after that, that was not the only reason but it helped the decision.) Another suggestion was Karo Syrup in every bottle, we did that, it didn't help. We've done it all, and now we are on to giving him Milk of magnesia, every so often, it works at the time but doesn't cure the problem.
Is my son going to have long term effects from this? Is there something else that maybe we could be trying. He gets watered down juice, he will drink water, but obviously prefers milk, which I dont want to give him to much b/c of this issue we are having. It saddens me that his little butt and stomach is hurtig while he's trying to poop. If he's walking around and then all of a sudden has to go, he will find Trav or I and we will have to pick him up, while he lays his head on our shoulder we push his knees up so they are by our chest and we will rub the lower part of his back, that seems to soothe him during that time, but I can not do this forever, I dont knwo what else to do.

We have the same problem in our house with 1 (I won't say who) but it's been going on for about 6 years (that probably gives it away!). When he was younger he didn't go for almost 2 wks. (that's bad) so we do have to give him a stool softner periodically. Luckily he's pretty regular now but it was not fun for anyone! Another they say, is a couple cups of apple juice a day it's the next best to prune juice. Or sprinkling metamucil in his cereal?
Have you tried withholding dairy all together for a couple weeks to see if that helps?
Other food that is good for constipation is pears, peas, peaches I know there's more but I can't remember right now.
I'm not a doctor but to me it sounds like he's lactose intolerant. ??
Amy (Amy-oh my) your input from a certain someone? : )
Thanks I will look into those things for sure!
This sounds all to familiar to us. Ours started around three months, and we still struggle with it now (he's almost 18 month). Our family doctor told us he may have these problems well into elementary school...so...here's what we do.
Milk (not all dairy for us) really seems to constipate him, so we limit milk to once a day. The rest of the day, he's drinking straight apple juice, and a little water here and there. We make sure he has the "P" fruits daily (just like Aleah said), and about every 4 days, I sprinkle "miralax" into one of his cups of juice.
We seem to be on a good routine with it all now, but it's a constant battle, and lots of awareness to what he's eating on our part. When we notice things getting a little hard, we start taking action cause we know in a day or two...it's going to be really bad.
I hope some of this helps. Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions...we've been to the doctor way too many times to count, and had numerous tests done on the little guy. kkalbin@comcast.net
Both tessa and levi were like that and i added a little prune or plum juice to thier bottles. I also mixed in prunes with thier oatmean/cereal in the morning. If it makes you feel better my kids still get plum juice every morning.
Hi Kim!
Thanks for the resting wishes:)
WEll, unfortunately Sammy has had these problems since birth and I have done all the diatary things they tell you to do.... (he would always strain but his poop would be intermittingly loose- he has hemroids:( ) He did have a tethered spinal cord, which can affect bowel and bladder (sorry I don't mean to worry you- its most likely not the case for you, but for us it may play a roll in all of this) He had surgery for that at 7 1/2 months and they say the const. could be a result of that, but even the urologist told me to do all the diatary things.....we put prune juice in his bottles and people would ask me if I was giving my son chocolate milk....!!! Anyways, We have regularly seen a GI since 4 months because of Sammy's reflux and feeding problems, so one of the times I went to the GI I really wouldn't let up about the const (its so bad sometimes he cries while he is squating and grunting) and she decided to do an x-ray of his bowel- turns out he was backed up all the way into his small intestines....needles to say he is on a perscription now...its not perfect, but it does help!
My advice would be if it has been an ongoing problem...see a pediatric GI- ask your peds for a referral or some suggestions...they are better equiped to deal with const. Yes, const. is a normal childhood ailment, BUT it can become a big problem if not handled well and if chronic....
Thanks for all the advice ladies, it really truely helps me, and I am going to consult his ped. again to see if we can talk to a Ped. GI
Heya Kim! I am the poop expert, you shoulda called! Remember Avery...not born with a you know what!?!?! We have had PROBLEMS to say the least with this issue. We have a perscription of tasteless powder we put in her drinks and since then, NO PROBLEMS...it's called: MIRALAX, generic is called GLYCOLAX. It's like $40, but it's better than putting on a rubber glove and sticking your finger up "there" to get "it" out! yes...i've had to do that on occassion!
It's no fun for anyone involved, but it does produce results: baby suppositories.
