Why do these things keep happening?

No wonder people are too afraid to send their children to school or anywhere else. I don't blame them. I mean I too wonder everyday what the next d ay is going to bring but I don't want to have to sit and worry in fear that if I were to send my child to school something horrible would happen.
I mean seriously, how many shootings (school) have there been in the past few years... too many!

Trav and I do get scared at times about raising a child in today's society because of all the violence, and the hate that is out there. You can't escape it, it's there. But I want to be able to send my child to school someday and not have to worry about who's going to walk into that school, or what may happen there.

I know things are inevitable but it just floors me, and I know it saddens you as well that these acts of serious violence keep happening, it just sickens me.

It makes me want to keep my child with me at all times and never let him go. Does that suond s little psychotic? Yea, maybe a little bit but why wouldn't I feel this way with all of these things happening around us.

I'm sure you have already heard about what I am referring to, bt if not, you can go here.

I agree! I teach in an elementary school that sits in gang territory. We have several lockdowns a year because the police are working something in the blocks surrounding our school.

I tell my 10 year old students that my number one job is not to teach them reading, writing and arithmetic, but to keep them safe.

It is sad that I have to work so hard to reassure my kiddos that they can feel safe at school. When I was their age, being safe at school never entered my mind.

Just know that everyday, teachers and administrators are doing their level best to keep your kiddos safe. We have plans, procedures and practices. When it all comes down to it, many of us would risk ourselves to save your kiddos.

Last Friday we had a lockdown during lunch. Kids ran off the playground screaming (we talked about the inappropriateness of this later, but they are just kids), and one boy was knocked down. Two of us instantly ran from our rooms to the youngster. My colleague, a male with more strength than me, picked the boy up and carried him to safety. Thankfully, he was not injured in his fall.

The lockdown lasted less than 5 minutes, and we were in no real danger, but my fellow teacher and I didn't know that when we ran to this boy.

I went to UT- Austin. Back in, 1967? 68? Charles Whitman went up the UT Tower and started shooting, killed many. It was so bizarre, huge national news. Still is very legendary.

I was thinking today that, it is starting to get where I don't bat an eye at a shooting at a college campus. And that is so sickening.
